02 November - The Sat Nav arrived
Took delivery of my new TomTom One Sat Nav. It was just like a birthday, when you actually got what you wanted! In the smart orange box was the sexy new TomTom One, SD card with UK map, windscreen holder, car charger, USB cable for the computer, CD rom plus some other stuff which I haven't even looked at. Within minutes I was in my car with the TomTom stuck to the inside of my windscreen, plugged into my cigarette lighter, driving.
After answering a few set-up questions, I set the Sat Nav to navigate me to a place that I picked out on the map, which was all done via the touch screen. But to my shock and horror, half way along the route it directed me up a dead end street. I couldn't believe it - the first time out with my new toy and it took me up a dead end street! Granted, it didn't use to be a dead end - about 5 years ago! This made me question how up-to-date the maps were.
Later I spent some time getting use to the TomTom's menus which I found confusing at first as some menus would change depending if a route was planned or not. It was easy to get lost in the menu system until I had a good look around. The more I explored the features the more impressed I became. There were many "points of interest" (POI) added as standard, but not any speed cameras. The friends I borrowed a few days earlier did have speed cameras added to the POI, but he must have downloaded them.
